What was your experience with programming? We had practically no experience with the EV3 Mindstorms, although we had lots of experience on apps like Scratch, Sphero, Dash and Dot as well as Blockly.
What worked? Our coding seemed to work pretty well at first, for our first attempt, and as we kept going it got better and better. As a group we thought that the arms were so much stronger and were able to hold the heavy weight up. We also thought that coding from the base worked better as the robot got more time to speed up. It was very exciting to get it to work! What didn't work? The code wasn’t very consistent at points and sometimes it backfired completely. What did you do when something didn't work? We recoded and didn’t give up trying. When the space ship didn’t get to the top we kept trying again and again and changing one variable at a time. When it worked we celebrated and when it didn’t we celebrated anyway! |
What was difficult?
We found that the first couple of lessons were really hard and we weren’t really accomplishing much. We didn’t give up but we were getting frustrated with our mistakes. We found that sometimes we were sitting around waiting for a new design which we had to adjust to. Something else we all noticed when we stepped back was that the robot sometimes wasn't lined up properly. We’d change our coding and then afterwards realise that we just had it in the wrong spot. Describe how you felt when you first got the mini space ship to move as well as when you made the space ship reach the top. When the mini space ship made it to the top our excitement was so loud that the man on the moon could probably have heard us! As we worked on this challenge at school, we had our Year 6 class mates come out of the classroom and tell us to be a bit quieter as they were working. Our team works so well together that we all hugged and screamed through that lesson and had fun. |
